Fremont is home to the well-known Fremont Troll, an eighteen-foot tall concrete statue of a troll crushing a Volkswagen Beetle in its hand. The troll is located under the Aurora Bridge and has become a popular destination for those seeking something a little out of the ordinary. The Fremont Arts Council is responsible for the eccentric events that have become associated with Fremont. It puts on the Summer Solstice Parade and Pageant, a parade which encourages all people to participate in the march itself. The parade boasts a wide variety of people, all with elaborate costumes and acts; it’s a display of the funky community for which Fremont strives. The parade starts in Fremont at the Fremont Fair and ends at Gas Works Park for a finale. The Fremont Fair marks the beginning of the parade and is a social event with food and drinks, arts and crafts, and performances. The fair also works to raise money to support low-income people in the community. Another event in Fremont is the annual Troll-a-Ween, a Halloween party by the Fremont Troll, where people of all ages come in costume to celebrate the troll’s birthday.
Along with the opportunities for celebrating art and culture, Fremont offers other ways to have a good time. The newly developed Fremont Peak Park is a great place to unwind on the walking trails. Fremont Canal Park is located on the Lake Washington Ship Canal and has beaches and quiet trails for pedestrians and dog-walkers. The Fremont Fair takes place at the park every year. The Fremont Shopping District is a small, but popular, destination. It offers both vintage and brand-name boutiques and a wide variety of bistros and cafés. The Fremont Dock Restaurant and Bar exemplifies the attitude of the neighborhood with a no-frills menu and atmosphere. It has become a magnet for college students and anyone seeking a break from the recently popular posh scene. With all of the different facets of the neighborhood, one thing is for sure: Fremont is welcoming of people from all walks of life.
